I have skin which over reacts to the slightest insult and now that I’m in my late fifties abrasions take ages to heal. I scratched my thumb against a thorn in midsummer and the entire thumb remained broken out for weeks. I used paw paw ointment which is great for insect bites but the area would re-redden if I got a tiny splash of lemon juice or a grain of salt on it whilst cooking. It is very very difficult to cook clean and garden and keep a wound entirelyclean. Anyway I was visiting friends and they had a tube of Aquafor by the sink. I used some and noticed the next day that my skin looked better. The high street only had larger tubes costing sixteen pounds so I bought this smaller duo pack online and put one by my armchair and one in my bag. After less than a week the redness has gone from the area as has the irritation and I can see small patches of normal skin in the centre of the wound. I’ve used pure petroleum jelly in the past without such good results so can only assume that the other ingredients in this ointment make it a thinner product which penetrates the skin more easily.

I’ve often had a problem with peeling lips since I was kid and after much (read: MUCH) research I think it may be exfoliative cheilitis. I tried several things from Vaseline to Blistex to Burts Bees… all had very little impact (though Burts Bees made it less painful when the skin was peeling). Aquaphor was a brand that was repeatedly mentioned on the internet by people with similar dermatological issues. So I thought why not give it a go! Unfortunately they don’t seem to sell it here in the UK which resulted in an Amazon purchase.The product itself came as a twin-pack as promised though it differs from other ‘on-the-go’ applicators in that the end of the tube is not designed to apply directly to the lips (but that’s a minor thing as you can put it on your finger and apply it… the ‘old skool’ way). It definitely seems to hydrate the lips though it may leave your lips white for the first hour after applying it if you have a similar condition to me. Also if water comes into contact with your lips after applying it it does not wash off like others. It’s only partially made of petroleum jelly (aka petrolatum) so allows the skin/lips to ‘breathe’ more easily.However I only gave it 4* because while it is much better than the usual 3* lipcare products one can find in a supermarket it hasn’t actually stopped the dryness of the lips. If I stop using it (or sometimes even when I do use it) the exfoliative cheilitis persists :(.Good product though! You only need a bit of it on your lips (may need more if using elsewhere as you can use this on hands etc)… so it may last you a long time. If you’re planning on using this in several different areas regularly I’d suggest purchasing the Aquaphor tub/pot. It’s particularly good for really dry skin (to the point where your skin might bleed or close to it) as it allows the skin time to recover especially when used at night!

Excellent little lip balms my little boy had severely chapped/eczema all around his mouth from the constant wiping and dryness at school. He was able to apply these himself and the twin pack means we had one in his bag and one in his room. Quite greasy very similar to vaseline (as the main ingredient is petroleum) but I think it’s the lanolin that made all the difference to his skin. Not a fan of the plastic though so have since found an excellent plastic free alternative natural lip balm with lanolin on Etsy also better to support small businesses!

I was recommended this ointment by a roller skater who often has cuts and grazes. I didn’t believe this ointment would be as miraculous as she said after all it seems to be just petroleum ointment so I didn’t hold out high hopes of soothing my cracked skin with it. However after just one application it eased the cracks around my finger nails and they healed far faster than ever before. ( Cracking caused by overuse of antibacterial gel). I’ve also found it useful for areas of chub rub on my inner thighs.

Interesting. It’s just petroleum–that’s all! I have no idea what qualifies this to be called a healing ointment any more than any other petroleum. But you know what? It does help the skin. Bizarre.I would not go so far as to call it Healing Cream as it doesn’t heal my skin any better than other salves and balms that were not designed to heal so I am unsure about the name. But still it’s a handy product.I do not use it on its own but apply a little dab on any sore or flaking skin from using facial peels. It certainly gives great elasticity and a soothing effect. But so would a tub of Vaseline which is essentially what this is surely?I’d score it a 4 or 5 if I knew why petroleum–with nothing else added–can be sold as healing cream. It’s a bit of a mystery. But still a handy thing to have and a nice travel size for keeping in the handbag.
