Barcelona Suffers a Painful Defeat

On Sunday night, in the final match of the eighth round of the Spanish national championship, Barcelona suffered a crushing defeat to Sevilla. Lewandowski’s penalty miss was the turning point of the match.

Barcelona entered the match under little pressure, having won quickly and temporarily secured top spot in the standings. Furthermore, the absence of the 2025 Young Player of the Year, Lamine Yamal, also significantly impacted Barcelona’s play.

And as feared, the visitors continued to concede. In the 13th minute, Alexis Sanchez converted a penalty, and 20 minutes later, Isaac doubled Sevilla’s lead.

Not to be left behind, Barcelona intensified their attack. In the 7th minute of first-half injury time, Rashford reduced the deficit with a classy volley that left the Sevilla goalkeeper unstoppable.

This goal seemed to give Barcelona hope of a comeback, but that was all they could manage in the match. Barcelona dominated the second half, but they were still gripped by anxiety as Sevilla launched sharp counterattacks.

In the 74th minute, Barcelona had a golden opportunity. After a foul by a Sevilla player, the referee awarded the visiting team a penalty. However, Lewandowski’s “killer” shot was inaccurate, sending the ball wide of the post. Lewandowski not only “helped” Sevilla maintain their lead, but also drastically dampened his teammates’ fighting spirit.

As a result, Barcelona conceded two more goals in extra time. Ultimately, they suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat to Sevilla. This was the Catalan team’s first defeat in the domestic league this season and their second consecutive defeat in just one week on the pitch.

Furthermore, this was the first time in 2025 that the team had lost two consecutive matches. Clearly, Yamal’s absence has had a significant impact on Barcelona at this time.
